Support for Public Freedoms
Avocat Henri Leclerc, a big-time supporter of public freedoms and a well-known name in the Paris bar, passed away. He was famous for standing up for people like Lucien Léger, Richard Roman, & the “leftists” from May 68. Plus, he used to be the president of the Human Rights League. The last time he argued in court was in 2020, ending a career that stretched over seventy years!
When He died
This great person has closed his eyes, leaving everyone in the world of justice super sad. Lawyers were wearing blacker robes than ever, mourning Henri Leclerc who left us at the age of 90 on Saturday, August 31, 2024, in Paris. His passing marks the end of an era for one of the last big names around. Whenever word got out he’d argue in court, and other lawyers, judges, and students would sneak into the room just to learn from their beloved old master.
Who was He
Avocat Henri Leclerc wasn’t just a lawyer; he was like a storyteller! He stood tall in court with his worn-out robe and fluffy white hair. His warm voice flowed like a river—friendly & confident! He didn’t just plead; he talked like a friend. Sharing his doubts and questions using simple words with such good humor—who wouldn’t want to listen? His emotions & righteous anger would pull people in! “Even when things were tough, he filled the room with his presence—it was really something,” said Thierry Lévy, another amazing lawyer who left us in 2017. Lévy explained how Leclerc made jurors feel: “There’s a good guy! The one he’s defending can’t be that bad.”
Personality Insights
Even though he was friendly & kind-hearted, this old lawyer knew how to be tough too! In court, his cross-examinations were intense. Avocat Henri Leclerc would carefully listen as witnesses or police officers answered questions while fiddling with his glasses—a report always close by—mindful that lawyers should only ask questions they know answers to. Often that poor person ended up tying themselves in knots until our old lion struck back with killer questions that left them shaken up and their stories mixed up! Then he’d sit down calmly with a half-smile waiting for more.
